Getting the Right Care During Home Isolation: Tips for Mild COVID-19 Patients

With cases unexpectedly reaching new heights in Malaysia, many positive COVID-19 patients, especially in Category 1 and 2, are required to self-isolate. Sunway Healthcare Group has developed a comprehensive guidebook and home care package for the public to safely manage their mild COVID-19 diagnosis during their home isolation period.

While quality patient care is at the epicentre of its healthcare facilities, Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) sees the need to take a proactive step in reaching out to communities to address health as a public concern, which has become more prevalent than ever.

The pandemic does not allow us to stand still. Since the beginning of COVID-19, SHG and its subsidiaries have been working on the next steps of interventions to support the community. Patient care remains our utmost importance in all the initiatives SHG embarks on, including COVID-19 pre-screening for patients and visitors, diagnostic tests, strict infection control protocols, management of COVID-19 patients, etc.

This next phase of the pandemic requires more home and social care support. Sunway Healthcare Group has launched an updated version of “Home Care Guidebook for Mild COVID-19”. This self-help guide aims to provide patients and their caregivers important tips on home isolation must-dos, warning signs, when to seek emergency help, and tips to improve breathing.

“Many times, patients, especially those in high-risk groups, may see disease progression. And those who have mild symptoms may end up with happy hypoxia, a phenomenon that happens all too often. This happens when a person’s blood oxygen levels drop below 94%, and oftentimes, the person is unaware until it’s too late,” said Dr Nur Elayni Borhan, Consultant Emergency Physician, Sunway Medical Centre.

Dr Rosmadi Ismail, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Sunway Medical Centre, elaborated that the guidebook also provides valuable tips on improving one’s lung capacity and restoring diaphragm function for patients who are currently battling COVID-19, or in the process of recovering.”

With the current guidelines from the Health Ministry where COVID-19 patients in the Greater Klang Valley who are experiencing mild or no symptoms are to undergo home isolation and remote surveillance, Sunway Healthcare Group continues to expand its service offerings to the community at large.

“In addition to the guidebook, we have launched a “Monitoring COVID at Home package” for patients in self-isolation for mild COVID-19. We understand that patients may have health concerns and wonder what the right treatment approaches are. The idea behind this home care package is to assist people in Category 1 and 2 of COVID-19 from the comfort of their homes via teleconsultation and home care clinical services,” said Dr Cheah Xian-Nian, Head of Staff Health & Satellite Clinics cum Medical Director’s Administration.

Priced at RM550, the 10-day package includes physical (drive-thru) evaluation and teleconsultation by a medical doctor, tracking of daily vitals and patient counselling by a nursing team, personalised briefing on self-care, 24/7 dedicated helpline, and free delivery of medication. Patients have an option to add on more services, such as Post-COVID-19 check-ups, home RT-PCR testing, home care supplies, and rental of oxygen concentrators.

These service offerings that are beyond the confines of SHG’s healthcare facilities are provided by Sunway Home Healthcare and Sunway Telemedicine Command Centre.
