PSD’s Decision to Halt Medical Scholarships Sparks Concern Over Malaysia’s Healthcare Sector

Malaysia’s healthcare sector faces a severe setback as the Public Service Department (PSD) suspends scholarships for medical students studying at local universities. The move has been met with criticism from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and warned of an adverse impact on the country’s healthcare system.

Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai, the president of the MMA, has called for an explanation from the PSD for the sudden policy shift. Malaysia has been struggling to reach the ideal doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:400 in public healthcare institutions, with some hospitals facing a ratio of 1:1000. The shortage of specialists in the country is another pressing concern, particularly with the rising demand for specialised services driven by an ageing population.

“Malaysia will become an ageing nation by 2030, where 15 per cent of its population will be 60 years old and older. How are we preparing for this demographic change?” Dr Muruga questioned.

The MMA has urged the PSD to provide projections for the number of medical officers, specialists, and allied healthcare personnel needed for the public healthcare sector in the next five to ten years. The association stressed the importance of effective planning for healthcare human resources that takes into account population growth and demand.

This call to action comes at a crucial time, as Malaysia grapples with an ageing population and an increased demand for quality healthcare services. With the country already facing a shortage of healthcare professionals, the PSD’s decision to halt scholarships for medical students will only exacerbate the problem.

The MMA’s plea to the PSD to reconsider its decision and to implement policies that ensure the country has an adequate number of healthcare professionals is a call to action that cannot be ignored. The healthcare sector is a crucial pillar of any country’s economy, and Malaysia must act quickly to safeguard its future.
