Taylor’s University recently launched their latest post graduate programme in clinical psychology. The two-year coursework-based Master of Clinical Psychology addresses the rising need for mental health specialists in Malaysia, combining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills serving as an enabler for graduates who wish to make a difference in the lives of those battling mental health disorders.

According to the National Health and Morbidity survey, every three in 10 adults aged 16 years and above in Malaysia suffer from some form of mental health issues. This statistic saw a staggering increase with the COVID-19 pandemic as many struggled to cope with mental health related problems. To date, there are over 300 Clinical Psychologists registered as a full member in Malaysia, but only around 200 are actively providing psychological services.

In line with the government’s efforts to meet the urgent need of mental health professionals and to build a positive mental health infrastructure in Malaysia, Taylor’s University’s Master of Clinical Psychology is a much-needed specialised degree programme.

“Mental health is equally important to the overall physical health as it can affect how someone thinks, feels and reacts to their environment and situation. The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the importance of mental wellbeing as several Malaysians face issues like anxiety, stress and even depression. As such, the launch of Taylor’s University’s Master of Clinical Psychology is a step in the right direction,” said Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Iman Afzan Al-Sultan Abdullah during the official virtual launch ceremony, an International Patron for World Mental Health Day.

“It is great to see education institutions invested in the overall wellbeing of society and designing programmes that respond to urgent societal challenges. I extend my well wishes to the students and faculty members who are part of this programme,” her highness said.

The Taylor’s Master of Clinical Psychology is a postgraduate programme developed locally by academic and industry experts. The programme aims to produce professional and competent clinical psychologists who are well versed in the fields of diagnosis, psychological assessment, psychotherapy and intervention, clinical research and prevention of mental health issues.

Students part of this postgraduate programme will be able to put their knowledge to practical use via Taylor’s University’s partnership with several leading mental health organisations in Malaysia. This includes InPsych Psychological and Counselling Services, the Mind Psychological Services and Training, Rekindle Centre for Systemic Therapy, Thrive Well Sdn. Bhd. (formerly known as SOLS Health) and People Psychological Solutions.

Along with building practical skills, the programme will also ensure that students receive education that meet the requirements and standards of the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology (MSCP). Upon completion, graduates will be eligible to register under the Malaysia’s Allied Health Professions Act 2016, which helps recognise them as valuable mental health practitioners and open doors to exciting career opportunities in various industries including health and well-being, education, non-government organisations, corporate and more.

“Taylor’s University has, for over 50 years, looked to push the envelope in pedagogy and student-centred learning while addressing the needs of the current market and closing the gaps to serve the community and help the nation’s development,” said Professor Dr Pradeep Nair, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer Taylor’s University.

“Following the successful launch of Taylor’s Centre for Human Excellence and Development (CHED) last year, which is Malaysia’s first AI powered research facility for mental health and behavioral sciences, we needed to continue that path to strengthen our mental health education infrastructure in the country. The launch of our Master of Clinical Psychology is our next step forward in developing access to high quality mental health in Malaysia,” he concluded.
